2016 USLA Open National Team Selection Criteria
Share |

With the addition of the Under 19 USLA National Team, standards for team selection have necessarily diverged. This criteria is specifically for the Open National Team selection and does not apply to the Under 19 National Team.

The USLA has been a part of international competitions for 60 years beginning with the 1956 Olympic Surf Carnival in Torquay, Victoria, Australia. In past years, we have been fortunate to compete in the World Lifesaving Championships, International Surf Racing Challenge (ISRC) and Sanyo Bussan International Lifesaving Cup. As each competition provides a different challenge both in terms of events and conditions, each is an opportunity to learn, grow and test abilities in different events both in surf and pool.

Selection criteria for World Championships may be different than selection criteria for the Canadian Pool Championships or Sanyo Bussan International Cup. As such, developing criteria to select the most successful team for each event can change based on the conditions and events contested.

Open National Team Selection Criteria

Any current USLA member, if eligible and able to participate, may be considered for the national team.

Performances in a recognized pool time trial, national or international competition within 36 months of the national team selection date, will be considered by the selection panel. It should be noted that an athlete’s entire body of work will be considered. The more events an athlete competes in provide more information for the selection panel.

The selection panel will also consider the following:

The status of the event being contested (regional, national, international) and applicability to the upcoming events.

The athlete’s potential for achieving the best result across the range of events.

The athlete’s potential for qualifying for finals.

The athlete’s previous experience of reaching finals and medaling in international events

The overall balance of the team required for the event.

The athlete’s contribution to the team overall both on and off the beach, foster a positive team culture and experience.

Athletes selected to the 2016 USLA national team must adhere to the Code of Conduct. Failure to do so will result in disciplinary action and potential removal from the national team.

2016 International Competitions

For 2016, The Canadian Lifesaving Pool Championships (May 14th & 15th), The Sanyo Bussan International Lifesaving Cup (July 2nd & 3rd) and Rescue 2016 (September 6th – September 11th) will be the international events national team members may potentially attend. Funding available for individual competitions will be limited. The World Championships, Rescue 2016, will be given priority for funding and will not be used as a developmental competition for the national team.

Open High Performance Squad

Potential national team members will develop through the USLA High Performance Squad selected on an annual basis. HPS membership is no guarantee of selection, an athlete who is not part of the HPS could be selected if their performances merit selection.

Attendance at High Performance Squad events will enable the team management and selectors to evaluate an athlete’s development, attitude and behavior toward tight team spirit necessary for a cohesive and successful team. It will also allow the team management to monitor the fitness levels of those with a potential for selection.

During the year, pool and ocean training camps will be held at various venues. HPS athletes are strongly encouraged to attend these camps as it provides opportunities to learn, utilize specific equipment and develop race specific skills. Please watch for announcements for these events.

Open National Team Selection Panel

The USLA Open National Team Manager, Head Coach and USLA Lifesaving Sport Chair are jointly appointing Assistant Open National Team Coaches for each team that is to be selected. The Open National Team Manager and the Open National Team Head Coach will chair the selection panel and the Open National Team Assistant Coaches will be members of the panel. Final national team approval will be provided by the USLA Lifesaving Sport Chair.

Once the Assistant Open National Team Coaches have been appointed, their details will be announced.

If you have any questions about these criteria or the process, please contact the USLA Open National Team Manager, Randy Eickhoff, Open National Team Coach, Mike Barrows or USLA Lifesaving Sport Committee Chair, Ed Zebrowski.

2016 ILS World Championships - Rescue 2016, The Netherlands, September 2016

Given the points available in various events at the World Championships, the USLA Open National Team will be composed of athletes that can be best suited to maximize the available points. More than one-half of the available points during the national teams competition come from events highlighting the swimming discipline. Additionally, almost 50% of the total points are available from events contested in the pool.

Therefore, the composition of the 2016 national team traveling to Rescue 2016 will most likely have three (3) swimmers, one (1) beach specialist, one (1) ironman, and one (1) craft specialist. In addition to the six men and six women named to the team, six alternates, one (1) swimmer, one (1) beach specialist and one (1) craft/ironman for the men and women respectively. This line-up assumes that athletes specializing in swimming are able to score points in pool events at the World Championships. In the event the selection committee cannot identify three swimmers that are able to finish in the top 16 in individual swimming events, the composition of the team will change.
